Black in Astro Receives Outreach Award from the Royal Astronomical Society

Ms. Caprice Phillips

The Black In Astro community organization, co-led by Ohio State graduate student Caprice Phillips, has been awarded the 2023 Annie Maunder Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society for its service to the Black community in astronomy and space-related fields.

Black In Astro was founded by Ms. Ashley Walker, a student at Howard University, in response to police brutality against Black Americans to provide support to current and future Black space scientists. The outreach and engagement of Black In Astro includes Black Space Week, a virtual conference hosted every summer.

The Annie Maunder Medal is open to everyone involved in outreach or public engagement in astronomy or geophysics. The medal is named for Annie Scott Dill Maunder (1868-1947), who was one of the first women to be made a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The award for 2023 lists the Black In Astro leadership: Ms. Ashley Walker, Ms. Caprice Phillips, Dr. Ronald Gamble, Jr, AJ Link, Esq., Mr. KeShawn Ivory, Ms. Cheyenne Polius, Ms. Bryné Hadnott, Mr. Dakotah Tyler, Mr. Robert Washington, and Ms. Naia Butler-Craig.
