2023 Black In Astro Undergraduate Research Showcase

BlackInAstro

Dear Black In Astro Community and Allies,

We are excited to announce the 2023 Black In Astro Undergraduate Research Showcase through a grant from the Heising-Simons Foundation.

Black in Astro is a grassroots organization and community that was founded by, and for, Black space professionals and students. Black In Astro is dedicated to supporting, nurturing, and creating new scholarship opportunities for people of the African diaspora globally. Black in Astro aims to inspire, develop, and enrich Black space professionals and students across all disciplines of the space sector. Black in Astro is committed to fostering joy and authenticity for all Black folks interested in pursuing a career in space.

This is an opportunity for Black In Astro undergraduates to showcase their research to the broader Black In Astro community and beyond! The Undergraduate Research Showcase is open to all #BlackInAstro undergraduates in the United States. Please note that applicants must be enrolled in an accredited university in the United States.

The competition is scheduled for June 23 2023 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm EST (virtually via Zoom) and will include monetary prizes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners (details below)!
  • 1st place - $1000.00 USD
  • 2nd place - $750.00 USD
  • 3rd place - $500.00 USD
We are also seeking to hire Black In Astro student community members to be judges who are at least at the graduate student level for the poster presentations. The presentations will cover fields related to astronomy, aerospace, planetary science, and astrochemistry and will consist of brief 5 -7 minute extended poster presentations from talented Black In Astro undergraduates. As a judge, you would be asked to (1) provide feedback for the students to help improve their science presentation/communication skills and (2) rank the presentations and decide on the top 3 winners for a monetary prize. We are seeking three graduate student judges and they will each be compensated $500.00 USD for their time and expertise.
