Title: Adventures of an Astronomer in Healthcare

Speaker: Courtney Epstein

Abstract:

As a PhD student in Astronomy at OSU, I studied the chemical evolution of our Galaxy using the combination of stellar spectroscopy and asteroseismology. Upon graduation, I learned what I was made of when I took a seismic shift in my career trajectory. Rather than pursuing a traditional postdoc, I became a Data Scientist and leader at a series of healthcare startups. Join me as I recount my journey to see one example of where a degree in Astronomy can take you, how that training translates to industry, and the types of problems that I got to work on. More broadly, I’ll offer a candid look at what it’s like to work in the tech industry from interviews to day-to-day responsibilities to fun opportunities. I’ll talk about how the industry has evolved since I started and share what I wish I knew when I stood in your shoes.
